Variant (book 1)By: Robison Wells
Genres: Adventure, Dystopian, Mystery, Romance and Sci-fi For Ages: 14 - 17 Benson Fisher is overjoyed when he is granted a scholarship to Maxfield Academy, because it means that he can leave behind his terrible foster family and life. But when he arrives, he quickly learns that it is not what he thought it was. The students are trapped in a deadly experiment, with no adults, and no way out. Even so, Benson is finding his life there to be increasingly enjoyable. The food is fantastic, and he likes a beautiful girl. But how do you escape from a place that was your escape to begin with? This book was interesting but super creepy. The events get steadily more horrific, so much that I almost put the book down about a hundred times. The twist at the ending was completely unexpected, but so many characters were killed off that I don't know how a story will be created in the second book. At first, this book appeared to be just another boarding school novel, but it was set apart by its division among the students. In most books where bad things happen to a society, the characters band together, but the characters in Variant are completely divided. Recommended for older teens, or for those that like a good scare. This book blew my mind! I would rate this book: A Great Read 3.5 Stars * * * .5 |
