The Red Necklace (BOok 1)By: Sally Gardner
Genres: Adventure, Dystopian, Magic, and Romance For Ages: 13+ In eighteenth century France, a country stewing in resentment and ripe for a revolution, lives Yann Margoza, a quick-minded boy with unusual powers, and Sido, the under-appreciated daughter of the Marquis de Villeduval. Both fight the battle against the oncoming wave of violence and anger, but both are chased by the relentless Kalliovski, an emotionless Count who is trying to stop the hands of time and build himself an immortal body. Swept up in the tide of the French Revolution, will Sido and Yann be able to fight the current of death and escape, or will they be met by the blade of the ever-hungry guillotine? While I did not find this book to be what I expected, it was much better than I ever could have anticipated. The description was rich and the plot was always kept entertaining with the historical context of the revolution. I love this author because she always manages to include a bit of everything: action, romance and even a touch of magic, without making it mainstream and stereotypical young adult fiction. It is a refreshing and unique read, but this book is even better if you have studied this unit in school. I would rate this book: A Great Read 4.5 Stars: * * * * .5 |
